Gang Mowing for home or sport - Useful information to help you identify the right gang mower for your situation and how to avoid the pitfalls of buying usless and obsolete used gang mowers.

Gang mowers have been around for over a hundred years and were originally developed to be used with horse or pony power.  There have been many manufacturers over the years and only a few remain in business or care about after sales service.

Please consider very carefully wether you will be able to procure spare parts or maintain the gang mowers in years to come.

The professional models today are of two basic cutting widths (24” & 30”) and may use an 8” or 10” cylinder diameter. Generally an 8” cylinder would be suitable for sport, fine lawn and parkland with a 10” for more growth and capability such as golf course semi rough or country park and paddock.

Considerations to the suitability of  cutting surfaces should be made as gang mowers are designed to work on good level ground and even rolling surfaces. The overall unit weight is also important to maintain traction as the wheels need to remain in contact with the surface to drive the cutting cylinder.

Buyer beware - Lightweight imported “Mini Gang” sets will be useless if you expect a consistent quality of cut - once you move forward and increase speed they start lifting and bouncing leaving uncut ribs on the surface.

If you want a lower cost mini gang set then take a look at a quality professional unit such as the Dennis Guildfords
– With each unit weighing 50kg on its own without the towing frame these gang mowers are more than adequate and produce a 1st class result – they are stout enough to hold tight to the surface and remain so even at max cutting speed.

The 30" (76cm) units manufactured by companies such as RTM, Ransome and Lloyds can be configured in sets of three, five or even seven. Much heavier than the junior units they require open space and a bit of thought when it comes to storage or maneuvering, It's all about horsepower and towing capability with these units, the general rule of thumb being 7hp per unit.

Set up and the correct towing unit is key to efficient operating and a long life from your gang mowers. Maximum towing speeds of 7mph (10kmh) with a level drawbar and a good positioning of the cylinder to the bottom blade cutting point is essential. Regular maintenance and adjustment is important as is greasing and topping up lubricant levels. Overall cutting width is 84" for a set of three.

We have experience of many different build options and towing units from horses to land rovers.
